Primrose Pandas are Respectful, Responsible and Safe

Dear Primrose Families,

Welcome to the final newsletter of the school year. Thank you so much for your support this year as I joined this fantastic staff and school. It has been a whirlwind year with so many moments to reflect on and grow from. This week included many celebrations, but one held dear to all is the retirement of two of our educators here. Mrs Hubbard and Mrs LaCross are two of our beloved teachers and they are ready to embark on a new chapter after devoting decades to teaching children to read, write and most importantly love learning. They have shared their talents with us here at Primrose and made cherished connections with staff, students and families. I am grateful that I was able to work with them this year and I know I speak for all when I say thank you for being exceptional educators and role models for us. You are forever members of our school family. Wishing you only the best as you reflect back on your careers and look forward to the new adventures and moments that await you.   Congratulations and thank you!

This week is also the time we “send off” our third grade students to fourth grade at Hampden Meadows when we held our celebration with these fantastic students and their families. As I shared on Wednesday, these children show their teachers, families and me what their best self can be each and every day and it is not always easy.  I am confident that they can wobble through the uncomfortable moments, continue to be there for one another and work through change. They have done a beautiful job staying connected to us and to one another. I hope those connections remain strong as they make your way to Hampden Meadows and beyond.  I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of their story here at Primrose. I am a very proud principal.

Special thanks to this tremendous staff for all of their hard work, their collaboration and their endless energy to provide our students with so many fantastic learning opportunities and memorable moments this year. Let this summer be a well earned break to recharge, reset and re energize. I am grateful for all you do for our students and families here and for me.

Educationally yours,

Coleen Smith

Art Installation: Photos only try to do this art piece justice. Ms Zapasnik and the third grade students created this beautiful installation as part of our celebration on Wednesday. The quote is so appropriate for the color and joy they bring to us. The balloon arch from the PTO is icing on the cake!

Last Day Celebration: The PTO planned the perfect combination of teamwork, play and learning for our entire school on Friday. Touch tanks from Mystic Aquarium were available for our students. They also enjoyed yard games like cornhole, parachute play and an obstacle course and a giant slide and hoop toss. I am sure you saw the fun temporary tattoos and face painting yesterday as well. Throughout the day teachers and staff shared that it was such a joy to spend time with the children on this last day in such a fun and interactive manner. The hours of planning, coordinating and running these events are priceless when we take into consideration this is all done by volunteers who give of their time to create these wonderful memories. On behalf of our staff and students-thank you to this fantastic team of PTO members and volunteers.

This beautiful quilt is a gift from the third grade and PTO. Each of the students signed it for me and it hangs with pride in our lobby right now. I absolutely love it and know that they will be in such good hands with Mr. Sangiuliano and his team at HMS.

Look closely-with all my high fives, fist bumps and goodbye hugs with students, I found this perfect imprint of the panda faceprint on my shirt. A sweet ending to the day that connects perfectly to the song our students all know by heart, today was a “… good, good day!”

Attention Incoming Kindergarten Families:

I wanted to be sure that any of our current preschool students who will be attending Kindergarten with us in the fall received the details for our Kindergarten screening. Please see the details below and use the two links included to schedule your appointment and to complete the short questionnaire. This same information will be sent out to new families to our school today as well.

Welcome to Kindergarten!  We are excited to have your child join us in the upcoming school year, and it will be here before you know it.  In August, you will receive information from us about your child’s classroom placement and Kindergarten Orientation. We need your help to ensure that our placement meets the needs of your child.

We will do our Kindergarten screening on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, July 25 and Wednesday, July 26

  • Monday, August  7 and Tuesday, August 8

  • Thursday, August 10 and Friday, August 11

This screening information will help us to create balanced Kindergarten classes and gather information on students in literacy, numeracy, articulation, and free play. The screening accomplishes two goals:

  1. To have better information on students entering Kindergarten

  2. To allow teachers to work on classroom routines and make connections during the first few weeks of school instead of assessments.

Please click on the links below to access two documents.  The first link is a short questionnaire about your child’s learning that would be helpful to get to know your child a bit. The second link is the SignupGenius to pick a sign-up time for the screening. Please know that screening is required. If you cannot attend a session, please email me directly so that we can establish an alternative plan.

Mrs. Hines has created a collection of ideas and activities for the summer. Math is an everyday skill and can be practiced and learned through play. Here is the link for your access. Bookmark it, revisit it throughout the summer and enjoy!

Student submission for the newsletter-this might be the start of a new habit for next year 🙂

The final goodbye to…

Congrats to Ms.Hubbard and Mrs.Lacrosse because they just retired. Ms.Hubbard is a very helpful 1st grade teacher that used to teach 2nd grade in room 9. Now room 9 is my teacher’s room. She came into my class and said her goodbyes. I heard a lot of good stuff about her. She wasn’t my 1st grade teacher BUT...I still hugged her and said goodbye.

Thank you to all of our families and staff members who enjoyed the first day of summer at Blout’s Clam Shack and Market. Yet another example of how our PTO has partnered with the community to bring families together and raise funds to offer our students fantastic learning opportunities and enjoy school events and traditions!

Thank you for a wonderful school year. Have a safe and play-filled summer!
