Dear Primrose Families, One of the highlights this week was hosting our midyear LEAPP walk throughout the school. Here in Barrington we have a team of educators who tour each school to see the amazing work of our teachers and students. The focus for these walks is to see the learning and how students are reflecting on their own growth. There were so many quality examples in each classroom for us to see and learn from to share across the district. Hats off to our fantastic educators and our students. Their hard work shines through! On Friday, February 10th the PTO will be hosting a Sweetheart Dance at the high school. Students can bring a sweetheart from home (parent, grandparent etc) to enjoy dancing, games and more. Details and tickets are available on their website and in the flier posted below. This is a family event, in the same spirit as Spooky Stroll, School Picnics or other PTO events. I emphasize this because we have had a significant increase in behavior problems because many of our students are focused on “asking someone to the dance” or “will they want to dance with me” and “crushes.” I ask for your help with clarifying that this is a family event where children are attending with their parents or a family adult. I hope that you will be able to join us for this fun family outing. As always, if you are interested in volunteering to help with this the PTO is in need of help with the bake sale and cake walk for this event. Please reach out to them if you can offer your time or talents. If you are in need of financial support to attend, please do not hesitate to reach out to me as scholarships are available and this is open to all students and families. Many hands make light work. This week at our PTO meeting Mrs Hines, our Math Coach and Interventionist, will be sharing strategies and ideas of how to enhance mathematical growth through positivity, awareness, and experiences every day in doable ways. I hope you will be able to join us to learn more about this and what the PTO is planning for us. Meeting link posted below with the full agenda. The Department of Education released the window of dates for our students to participate in the RICAS state assessments. It is a state expectation that all students in the designated grade levels will participate. As a district, we are planning to have our third grade students participate as follows: English Language Arts on April 19 and 20 and Mathematics on May 17 and 18th. Make-up dates have been built in for both academic areas for any illnesses or absences during this time. If you have a third grade student, please add these dates to your calendar. As these dates approach, I will share additional details and reminders. RIDE has opened the annual Surveyworks School surveys for the state. We will have our school survey open for all elementary schools for the two weeks prior to the February Break. I have been working with the School Improvement team and our PTO to help promote this and support our families in order to share your thoughts and include some celebration opportunities for our students should we reach our target. The survey results not only help the department of education determine how we are progressing, but as a district and a school, we use the results and feedback to set goals and make decisions for our students and school communities. It is vital that we get as much participation as possible from our staff, families and students grades 3-12. I will share more as the time approaches for the survey here at Primrose. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey and share your thoughts. This week we will be practicing our second lockdown drill this week. As I have shared in the past, these drills are mandated by the state and give us the opportunity to both practice and make improvements to our procedures. We reinforce with our students that sometimes we need to leave the building to stay safe (fire drill or evacuation drill) and sometimes we need to stay indoors (lockdown) . The students of all ages here have done well in following the procedures and listening to the adults to be sure they are able to hear the directions and details as we practice. I will be sending out a separate email the day prior to the drill as a reminder. Educationally yours, Coleen Smith |
