Last year, Rhode Island (RI) transitioned from the State mandated PARCC assessment to the Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment (RICAS) in the Spring of 2018 for Math and Literacy (Reading and Writing). The RICAS is aligned with the Massachusetts Common Assessment (MCAS). RI made the switch because very few states continue to take the PARCC and Massachusetts (MASS) is a global leader in education.
On Tuesday, October 22, 2019 the Rhode Island Department of Education released the 2019 RICAS assessment results. Barrington Public Schools demonstrated overall achievement at the top of RI and performed well beyond the state average and exceeded the state average in MASS. Importantly, Barrington, as a district, realized growth from 2018 to 2019 assessment.

The District is proud of the work of our educators and students in achieving strong growth and achievement on our RICAS assessment. While we are measuring the same learning standards, RICAS has a rigorous performance standard. The District will now begin the process of thoroughly analyzing our assessment results to create action plans for continuous improvement. It is important to note, however, this initial analysis will not include trend data, as we only have two years of RICAS data to review. Rhode Island, and Barrington specifically, can learn from the lessons of Massachusetts over the past 20 years. Using the same assessment tool allows us to more closely chart progress as we make additional investments and improvements to teaching and learning in our state.
Parents will receive a copy of their child’s report in the mail. The RICAS reports will be mailed out on Monday, October 28th. In addition, scores will be uploaded into ASPEN under the assessment tab for review and comparison with previous state and local assessment scores.
It is important to remember that high school students are not administered the RICAS assessment. The high school state assessment score is measured by the School Day SAT. On October 3, 2019 the Rhode Island Department of Education released the 2018-2019 administration of the Statewide SAT and PSAT scores. Please see the chart below outlining our students’ performance on the School Day SAT results for all juniors who took the SAT in the spring;
