2019 School Accountability Release
On November 14, RIDE released the school accountability results for 2019. This is the first year that we will report results under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and it is the first time Rhode Island has identified new schools for improvement since 2014.
Barrington Schools is proud to announce that we achieved 5 of the 22 five-star ratings given in the state and 1 of the 49 four-star ratings in the state. The remainder of the schools in the state ratings were as follows: 134 schools rated 3 stars, 59 schools rated at 2 stars, and 35 schools rated at 1 star. Our rating scores are as follows:
Barrington High School 5 Stars across all indicators
Barrington Middle School 5 Stars across all indicators
Hampden Meadows School 5 Stars across all indicators
Nayatt School 5 Stars across all indicators
Primrose Hill School 5 Stars across all indicators
Sowams School 4 Stars Overall, with 5 Stars in Exceeds Proficiency and Subgroup Performance, 4 Stars in Achievement
It is important to note that a school can only receive the overall star rating of its lowest rating. For example, if a school received ratings of 5 Stars across 5 indicators and a 3 Star rating on 1 indicator, their overall rating is a 3. As such, although Sowams received 5 Stars in all but one category, their overall score is 4 Stars based on one category.
Rhode Island’s approach to school accountability, which includes Star Ratings, School Report Cards, and school improvement, was jointly developed by the Committee of Practitioners (CoP), consisting of parents, teachers, school and district leaders, and other community members over an 18-month period.
School accountability provides us the opportunity to comparably review the progress of our schools and to learn what’s working and where we need to make improvements. The new system assigns points to each school based on the following categories:
Academic Performance
Achievement
Growth
English Language Proficiency
Science* (future measure)
Student Success
Student Absenteeism
Teacher Absenteeism
Exceeding Expectations
College and Career Readiness
Graduation
Graduate Proficiency* (future measure)
Diploma Plus* (future measure)
Each of our schools received a star rating based on the total points received in each category. The general description of the stars can be seen below. To learn more read the Star Indicator Table.
Rhode Island is currently working on a plan to support low-performing schools. The plan includes a teaching and learning hub, strategic, evidence-based school improvement funding, community advisory boards, public reporting and transparency, responsive exit criteria, and school redesign.
Although all schools in Barrington received overall ratings of 4 stars and above, we will also be engaged in a deep dive toward continuous improvement in all schools across all indicators aligned to our strategic plan.
For more information, please read the Parent Guide to Accountability developed by the Rhode Island Department of Education. The full report cards will be available on the RIDE website.
Barrington’s overall performance is credited to a dedicated and hardworking staff, students who come to school ready to learn and a supportive community who values the importance of a good education.
